Review: Blessed Fury by C.S. Wilde

Angels roam the streets in C.S. Wilde’s new fantasy/romance/detective novel Blessed Fury. Ava Lightway, a Guardian Angel, is assigned to a supernatural detective hellbent on avenging his partner’s death. Liam Striker is impressively handsome, glowering in a corner of a dive bar when we first meet him. He and Ava fight a demon for control of a despondent old man, setting up a highly unexpected twist in the death of his partner.

I’m going to level with you all. I have a strong dislike for fantasy novels with religious overtones, even if those religious overtone’s are the book’s own theology. And when the novel gets bogged down in these details, it becomes a slog. Where Blessed Fury really shines is interpersonal relations. Besides Liam, Ava enjoys a frisson of attraction with Ezra, the Messenger. Ava is a strikingly modern woman for one who lived over a century ago, as is her friend Justine. Their exchanges are snappy–I hope that the planned sequel features more of these two discussing subjects besides their love lives.

Liam is condescending, rude, and a slob. But he has blazing green eyes, a chiseled jawline, and a tragic backstory. The will-they-or-won’t-they dance has been executed well in Blessed Fury.

Overall, the book is a fun read. It has twists on all of the detective novel cliches–vampires stand in for junkie informants, wolfsugar in lieu of heroin, demons with good hair, a street fight between a Guardian and a Werewolf (okay, maybe the last two aren’t so cliche). It’s a fun, sexy read and I look forward to the sequel.
