First Birthdays: Rainbow Baby
Rainbow babies are so named because they come after a loss, the rainbow after a storm. Bryson’s mother suffered a series of miscarriages before he was born at 34 weeks. After a two-month NICU stay, his family is grateful to have celebrated his first birthday in August. His party was rainbow-themed and everyone spoiled him with attention.
He was the only baby there and both sides of the family are older, so it was a calm and low-key affair. The centerpiece was the birthday boy, smashing into his cake with fury and gusto that was hard to imagine when he was intubated.
The food was gorgeous. ROYGBIV ruled everything from the vibrant crudites to the bowls of M & Ms separated by color. Fruit kabobs were a big hit: grapes, blueberries, kiwis, pineapples, cantaloupes, and strawberries on a wooden skewer.
